PSWC Young Scientist Satellite Workshop topics

Communicate science

Interacting with society and spreading knowledge to the public is an important task for the scientific community which is not easily fulfilled.  The public knowledge about a specific subject can be very diverse; however, it is of great importance that you, as a researcher, can overcome this knowledge barrier. This workshop aims to help you better communicate your science beyond the scientific environment.

Entrepreneurship/Pitch your idea

Entrepreneurship is not only the capacity to develop, organize and manage business to make a profit, it is a way of thinking and acting for creative problem solving with passion and persistence. The concept is closely related to the ability to explain complex ideas and complicated concepts in a condensed and straightforward manner. Whether it is to sell your idea to a potential investor or explain your research to a future employer, all researchers eventually encounter a situation where they only have a few minutes to explain and attract interest for their research.

Excellence in science

Conducting trustworthy experiments is the core of all research; however in academia good laboratory practice (GLP) is rarely applied. GLP is a practice to ensure high quality pre-clinical research, so that the data presented in articles and patents reflect the results obtained during the experiments. Data management and handling has become increasingly important in the scientific community, correlating to the discussion of reproducibility of results, which in recent years has become a hot topic.

Grant application

As a young researcher funding is a key aspect to move further in your career with post-doc positions, and later for initiating your own research group. Applying for grants can be difficult; however, in this session an overview of the process will be presented focusing on grants for young scientists, e.g. PhD students and post-docs.

Patenting

It is important to be aware of your rights, and how to reason when the issues of patenting comes into question, as published science cannot be granted a patent. This session will provide you with the main issues to be considered before applying for patent to ensure the protection of the rights and welfare of people who participate in research projects.

Pedagogical skills

Pedagogy is the art of teaching, and a necessity within the academic environment. In this session, you will be given the opportunity to develop your skills as a teacher in a laboratory/seminar environment. The focus of this session will be how to activate and engage students, and how to effectively introduce students to new concepts and ideas.

Regulatory framework

Legal and economic issues that surround pharmaceutical products constantly increase in complexity due to global trading. This session will address the requirements and procedures for the marketing authorisation of medicinal products for human use, as well as the rules for the constant supervision of products after they have been authorised.
